Died in Japan (sic)

Councillor EA Hill of 6 Clift Avenue, Chippenham has received the sad news that his younger son Mr Stanley George Hill died last February whilst interred by the Japanese in Borneo.

Stanley Hill who was 33 ½ years of age was educated at Bradford-on-Avon Grammar School and the Chippenham Technical School where he gained a County University Scholarship to Oxford. He gained his BSc degree in March 1934 and secured a Civil Service appointment with the British North Borneo Chartered Company. When war broke out he was secretary to the Governor.

In 1938, Mr Hill came home for a short holiday and married a young lady from Bucks. There is 1 daughter aged 6.

With the invasion of Borneo, Mr and Mrs Hill were interned in separate camps in Sarawak. Mr Hill was allowed to talk to his wife and child across a wide ditch once every 2 months.

When freed by the Allied Forces, Mrs Hill cabled that she was safe and was in Australia. The cable also contained the news that her husband had died.
