The Roll of Honour
Official notification has been received of the death in action on the
Western Front of Arthur George, the eldest son of Azor Short a much
respected postman of this town. The gallant young soldier shortly after
the outbreak of war joined the Royal Garrison Artillery (Territorial) at
Truro where as a postman, he was stationed and had been serving in France
about 15 months prior to his death which occurred shortly before reaching
his 21st birthday.
Since leaving school, his whole working life had been spent in the
postal service. First as a boy messenger at Chippenham then as assistant
postman, Corsham to Neston, from which he was promoted to an established
postmanship at Truro. He was much respected by his colleagues, quiet and
painstaking and was described by a senior postman at Truro as one of the
best boys in the whole world. Much sympathy is felt for Mr and Mrs Short
who have 2 other sons serving in the Army.
