Native of Castleton, Manchester. Only son of C. H. and Mary Ann Opie, of Pewhill Cottages, Chippenham, Wilts.

Opie had attended St Pauls' school and was given a place at the County School in March 1912. He had only been in France a short time before his death.

His father who was born in Redruth, Cornwall, is listed as an Iron moulder living in Rochdale in the 1901 census.
