Casualty list 9th March 1915
Killed in action Pte S Morse 10257. 3rd Wiltshire Battalion
Wilts Times 3 April 1915
In ever loving memory of our dear son and brother Sydney Morse who was
killed in action March 2nd 1915 aged 17
Out on yonder battlefield, there is a silent grave,
Is one we loved so dearly, but we could not save,
His King and Country called him, he bravely did his best,
But God thought fit to take him to his eternal rest.
Never forgotten by his father, mother, brothers and sisters.
Causeway, Chippenham.
Wilts Times 4 March 1916
The Wiltshire Regt war diary records the death of Morse as:
"In trenches. Enemy shelled from N of LAITERIE also main road and J 11
otherwise quiet.
Killed Lieut P M J Power RAMC attached 1st Wilts and one man,
buried in Cemetery near Chateau KEMMEL."
However, Captain E Harvey, C Company, 1 Wilts sent a letter to his
sister Amy dated 9 Mar 1915 in which he says "Private Morse was
killed instantaneously by a German bullet last Tuesday afternoon while in
the trenches". This would seem to be the standard way of informing the
next of kin regarding the circumstances of the death of soldiers.
