At 08.06 hours on 18 December 1942 HMS Partridge (Lt.Cdr. William Alan Frank Hawkins, DSO, OBE, RN), on an anti-submarine sweep, was hit by one torpedo from the German submarine U-565 and sank west of Oran, Algeria in position 3550'N, 0135'W.
